The United Nations has been a parody of itself for decades, but in arguably the most ludicrous example of its complete lack of self-awareness, it singled out Israel as the lone nation to be condemned for women’s rights violations. Among those who voted to isolate Israel for their “crimes” were Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen, nations that are so abusive to women that it’s no longer news to hear of their misogynistic atrocities.
This resolution was among a slew of other attacks on Israel as an “occupier” of “Palestine.” Despite the unambiguous hypocrisy by the U.N. Economic and Social Council, only two of the 54 nations on the council voted against it: the United States and Canada. Four abstained and three were absent.
The list of nations supporting the resolution include several nations whose laws treat women as second-tier citizens. In many, beating women for various reasons is legal. This is, of course, an illegal practice in Israel, but the United Nations’ narrative has consistently opposed the Jewish state in every possible way even when doing so would be comical if it weren’t so sad.
Nations who voted in favor of singling out Israel for women’s rights violations were:
Andorra, Angola, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Benin, Cambodia, China, Colombia, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Ethiopia, France, Ghana, India, Iran, Ireland, Japan, Kenya, Luxembourg, Mali, Malta, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Paraguay, Philippines, South Korea, Russia, St. Vincent, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Yemen.
As UN Watch noted, the resolution goes after Israel while not even mentioning the rights abuses committed by Palestinian women’s own governments:
The resolution completely ignores how Palestinian women’s rights are impacted by their own governing authorities—the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, and Hamas in Gaza—nor does it mention how women are discriminated against within patriarchal Palestinian society.
The United Nations as a body hates Israel. As Muslim-majority nations increase their influence over the U.N., this hatred continues to get worse. But yesterday’s vote highlights that this hatred has unhinged them from reality. It’s time to defund the U.N.
