I’ll admit, my track record for recognizing when a social network is going to be big or not is shoddy. I was given an invite to be one of the first 400 people on Foursquare all those years ago and thought, “Who would want to broadcast where they are at all times?” Oh, how little I knew then.
It’s for this reason I’ve stuck mostly on Twitter and occasionally on Facebook. But the way things are heading, it’s becoming increasingly clear conservatives and Christians are not going to be treated fairly on the big platforms, so it’s time to hedge my bets. I’m checking out Parler.
At first glance, it seems functionally solid. Similar to Twitter but with a few more options, it passes the instant technology test. I haven’t put it on my phone yet, which is obviously a huge component of the technology, but I’m going in with the assumption that if it’s being looked at by others, it must be okay on mobile.
I found patriots instantly. That was nice. They also instantly engaged with me, leaving the fear of a ramp-up from complete obscurity off the table. It seems as long as you espouse patriotic views from the start, you’re already in the cool kids’ club. That’s a drastic change from the other social networks that seem to make it hard to even find patriots sometimes.
Bottom line: I have nothing bad to say at this point about Parler, but more importantly I see a lot more potential than I’ve seen at other emerging social networks. If the President comes on, it’ll explode. It might explode without him.
