The hardest part about writing reviews for short films, such as the science fiction shorts Dust delivers, is that it’s nearly impossible to talk about them in a meaningful way without spoiling them. They’re short, and by their nature any details one might give is probably crucial.
That’s the beauty of the short film format. Unlike feature-length or even television-length films, short films are forced to say as much as possible in much less time. Most Dust videos are anywhere between 3-20 minutes long, making the need to cleverly deliver characters we connect with in situations we grasp while building tension and finding a resolution extremely difficult. But many if not most Dust films do just that.
I’ve enjoyed several, including Hyperlight, Iteration 1, and Nano, but none have been more enjoyable than Exit Strategy. This won’t spoil much since you find this out very early on, but it’s very similar in premise to Groundhog Day, just without the comedy, repetitiveness, or Bill Murray. Nonetheless, it’s a great take on the time travel genre.
If Dust continues to put out films like Exit Strategy, they may become my go-to choice for science fiction entertainment, period. It’s that good.
