It was a gaffe bigger than anything Joe Biden or Howard Dean have committed in their illustrious careers of cringe-worthy gaffes. CNN analyst Areva Martin went on conservative SiriusXM radio host David Webb‘s show and proceeded to accuse him of relying on his “white privilege.”
As you probably know by now, Webb is black.

There’s a problem, though. This is being played off by both sides as just a silly progressive doing silly progressive things, making assumptions and coming across as fools. But here’s the thing. This isn’t just a metaphor for false leftist bias or a symbol of reverse racism. This is part of a much bigger problem in America today, the plague of identity politics that is rampant in mainstream media.
It’s one thing for politicians to invoke identity politics. Progressives have a hard time justifying their policies without invoking identity politics. I’m a firm believer that if you could get people to hear the merits to both sides of any political argument, a strong majority would realize that a conservative philosophy towards governance is most beneficial to the individual, which leads to extreme benefits for the collective. By starting with tribes and working down, we invariably stifle the drive of the individual which hurts the collective.
But this is more than just an issue of individualism versus collectivism or personal accountability versus the progressive blame game. Identity politics as used by media personalities like Martin prevents people from being accepting responsibility for their lives. We heard in her excuse that her “people” gave her incorrect information. She instantly leaped to blame in an instinctive manner, one that is rampant throughout mainstream media. When they’re wrong, they weren’t really wrong. That mentality is permeating throughout society thanks to the identity politics of mainstream media.
Progressives must start treating Americans as human beings. Focusing on the color of their skin, the religion they practice, or their status in society is not how to heal America in these tumultuous times. Instead, focus on finding solutions that actually work.
