Armchair politicians are screaming on Twitter about tonight’s announcement that the United States is backing down to Turkey’s demands regarding Syria. Our allies against the Islamic State, the Kurdish-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, are expecting to be attacked by the Turkish military now that the cover we were giving them is being removed. If that happens, it’s time to evict Turkey from the umbrella of NATO that they’ve enjoyed for decades.
Shortly after this unpopular moved was announced, critics rightly pointed out that we’re essentially abandoning the people who helped us defeat the Islamic State. But there’s something that we cannot ignore. As long as Turkey is in NATO, we cannot fight them. As unfortunate as it is that our real allies, the Kurds, are now likely to be targeted by Turkey, our formal agreement as a member of NATO supersedes our allegiance to the SDF.
Media around the world is already grabbing the story and scratching their collective heads about the rationale. Yes, the President has been promising for years to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria, but this seems to be a move that will not receive much favor from anyone foreign or domestic as it is very likely to spark a new war.
Trump gives green light to Turkey to takeover Syria, displace US partner
For four years the US and mostly Kurdish fighters in eastern Syria have fought and defeated Islamic State in northeast Syria. On October 6 the White House decided to give the green light to a Turkish invasion of the same area to displace the partner forces the US had been working with.
For more than a year and a half US President Donald Trump has been seeking to leave Syria. In the midst of the impeachment crisis he has now made the decision not to pressure Ankara diplomatically, but to sacrifice other US allies in the war on ISIS.
According to a statement from the White House press secretary Trump spoke to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the US says that “Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into Northern Syria.” The US will not support the operation and the US claims it has defeated the ISIS “caliphate,” so it is mission accomplished in terms of what the US initially went to Syria to do. This is the logic by which Washington has decided to act in the face of a year of Ankara’s threats to takeover eastern Syria.
As expected, the SDF isn’t happy at all about this.

But Erdogan's threats are aimed to change the security mechanism into a mechanism of death, displace our people & change the stable & secure region into a zone of conflict and permanent war.— Coordination & Military Ops Center – SDF (@cmoc_sdf) October 7, 2019

4. Force the #Syrian people to subject to the extremist #terrorist organizations as #Nosra & #Daesh, that still retain more than 50K extremist terrorists, & also they are able to extend their reach all Syria.@rabrowne75 @gaylelemmon @LindseyGrahamSC @CENTCOM @brett_mcgurk— Coordination & Military Ops Center – SDF (@cmoc_sdf) October 7, 2019
There’s only one way this isn’t as bad as it all sounds. If President Trump traded responsibility for Islamic State prisoners in exchange for a limited engagement by Turkey into the region, then there’s a chance this won’t end in a Kurdish bloodbath. We don’t know what the two Presidents discussed or what agreements were made, but one would hope this isn’t the abandonment of a valuable ally to save tax dollars, as the White House statement seems to imply.

NATO is the one thing Turkey has going for it in regards to a relationship with the United States. If they choose to use this as cover for their attacks against Kurds, than that cover needs to be lifted immediately. We’ll need to monitor this closely.
