Conservative (former) radio show host Joe Walsh thought his nationally syndicated program, “The Joe Walsh Show,” may be put in jeopardy after he announced he’s running for the GOP nomination against President Trump. It still came as a surprise to him as he received word of his show’s cancellation moments before doing an interview on CNN.
The former Congressman has been the target of Trump supporters ever since his announcement. They’ve called out his conservative credentials, pointed to racist Tweets from his past, and hounded him for being a “deadbeat dad.” And now that his primary communication platform is gone, it would seem like a campaign that had no chance of success somehow has even less of a chance now.
I appreciate Walsh, not for running for President which is a terrible mistake, but for attempting to stand by his perspectives. As a former “Never-Trumper,” I know what it’s like to want to do something to stop candidate-Trump from winning the GOP nomination in 2016. And while I adamantly opposed Hillary Clinton, I feared candidate-Trump would not be conservative enough to set the nation in the right direction. But Walsh was on the opposite side of the fence back then. He supported the President’s campaign. We’ve since gone in opposite directions; I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the President’s policies and Walsh has been disappointed, growing disillusioned and somehow coming to the conclusion that he can do more than help Democrats.
That’s what he’s doing by running. He has zero chance of beating the President – by his own estimates 80%-90% of his (former) audience support Trump. But he does have the ability to throw dirt that can be used by Democrats in the general election. It won’t be much. In the whole scheme of things, Walsh isn’t very different from Anthony Scaramucci or other former Trump allies because their only audiences during CNN interviews are people who wouldn’t vote for Trump anyway. Nevertheless, his attempt can spark some interest, establish a talking point, or otherwise increase the Democratic nominee’s chances of winning next year.
When the President does something right, I praise him. When he doesn’t something wrong, I criticize him. As I said before, I’ve thus far been pleasantly surprised with many of his policies from helping with tax cuts to moving the embassy to Jerusalem. I love that he backed out of the Iranian Nuclear Deal as well as the Paris Climate Accords. His attempts to secure the border are getting better, albeit late. And while his communication style has caused problems, it has also brought about positive effects. Much of the economy’s success can be attributed to the President’s focus on it.
I don’t like bump stock bans. I loathe red flag gun laws. I’m against tariffs, but I’ve learned to embrace them temporarily since their success has now become the fastest path to revisiting a conservative free market world economy in the future. Voicing opposition and support based on the individual policy proposals has allowed me to maintain my own sanity while giving me many more reasons to support the President than to oppose him.
Then, there are the Democrats. There isn’t a moderate among the frontrunners, including Joe Biden. Their policy proposals are destructive at best and in some cases represent existential threats to the near-future of our nation. Even if I didn’t appreciate the President’s successes, I could never do anything that would help the Democrats beat him. At this point, too much is at stake.
This was a poor decision by Walsh. His futile run for president is not going to elevate his brand or start a conservative revolution. It’s only going to cause him grief and give hope to the splinter cells on the right who oppose the President.
