If you are on Twitter you have probably noticed an increasing amount of unavailable tweets in replies on major tweets. For instance, the ratio Vice received, for supporting the sexualization of children, saw an enormous amount of unavailable tweets in the reply section. So two questions should arise here: What is going on? Why is it happening?
The first question has two observable answers, maybe three. Perhaps, it is possible some of the replies are from accounts that have blocked my own. But first verifiable answer is that private accounts are now displayed and hidden. I have seen on multiple occasions replies to the unavailable tweets being displayed and the account handle in the comment thread is from a private account. But can that many people really close off their accounts? Another question is why would Twitter display these. Nonetheless, it is unlikely that Twitter has this many private accounts randomly replying to a same tweet and getting placed in the same pack. Instead, this is a very visible form of shadowbanning called a thread ban.
Definition
According to ShadowBan.eu “This is what is referred to as conventional shadowban or ghost banning as well. It comprises a search ban while threads are completely ripped apart by hiding reply tweets of the affected user to others. Everything will look perfectly normal to the affected user but many others will not be able to see reply tweets of the affected user at all. Reasons for this ban include behavior like excessive tweeting or following. Again, this type of ban seems to be temporally limited for active accounts.”
Significance
For those who do not order their timelines chronologically, instead (foolishly) choosing Twitter to curate what tweets appear at the top, tweets by average Joes don’t rank very high in their algorithm compared to blue checkmark tweets. The best way to get your tweet seen by the most people is to reply to a significantly larger account’s tweet. After all, this is how we know who the Krassenstein Brothers are. Users (and bots) that are thread banned are denied the luxury of being seen by a much larger audience then they alone can reach, and they don’t know it, unless they check. These users may come off as leaches, but nothing is wrong about replying to a tweet you agree with or challenging a tweet you don’t. In fact, this is healthy dialogue. But the powers at Twitter seem to disagree and an untold number of accounts are affected by the arbitrary wielding of the thread ban.
Application
Social media giants have been making many decisions ahead of the 2020 elections to police social media. From the VoxApocalypse to the deplatforming. These leftist companies aim to police speech. One wonders how the thread ban is being applied between various ideologies. But if any past indications of shadowbanning or censorship is any indication, it’s fairly certain, Conservatives, or right leaning folks are the primary target of the thread ban.
