Summer has started in Chicago. Over the weekend there was a violent uptick in gun violence. According to the Chicago Tribune:
Calling Chicago’s most violent weekend so far this year “despicable,” police Superintendent Eddie Johnson stuck to the department’s usual explanation for what went wrong, blaming the flow of illegal guns and a too-lenient criminal justice system.
“Unfortunately, over the past 72 hours in Chicago, we saw a despicable level of violence,” Johnson said at a news conference Monday at police headquarters. “Weekends like this remind us all of the challenges that we face and that they are complex and profound.”
According to the department, at least 52 people were shot, eight fatally, from 6 p.m. Friday until midnight Monday. At least one other person was fatally stabbed, bringing the homicide toll to nine.
More than half the victims — 31 to be specific — were wounded during a 12-hour burst of gunfire from Friday evening to Saturday morning in areas of the South and West sides that have long struggled with crime, poverty and hopelessness. Four of them died.
Chicago is on track to see their homicide rate drop in 2019, but the summer has just started, and typically the violence in the city peaks during the summer months. The death toll from the weekend was later updated to ten. The city has long been central to the gun control debate. They have very stringent gun laws yet still see high levels of gun violence. Perhaps Chief Communications Officer for the Chicago Police Department, Anthony Guglielmi offers a clue as to why:
As of this afternoon, 11 of the 19 individuals arrested on gun charges over the weekend by #ChicagoPolice are already out on the street. 7 of the individuals were previously convicted felons and 6 had prior gun offenses in their backgrounds pic.twitter.com/yOXiX4tSyS

Perhaps this is a shot over the bow to city prosecutors. I can not think of another reason the CPD would put this information out, but it is a key point in the debate for legal gun owners who resist further infringement of their 2nd Amendment rights. What good are additional gun laws if the current ones are not enforced? Why should our ability to defend ourselves be limited when criminals with guns are released back into the community?
We have repeatedly seen in highly publicized shootings, that the perpetrator obtained their gun illegally. Due to failures in processing the individual’s ability to purchase a gun or other means, they obtain a firearm. Oftentimes, they are known to law enforcement, yet are still able to commit a crime.
Yet every Democrat candidate for President is talking about further restrictions on legal gun owners. However, under the last Democrat administration, prosecution of gun crimes fell. The Trump administration has stepped up enforcement since 2017, but Democrats seem conflicted between their views on guns and criminal justice reform. Cities, states and the federal government seem to prosecute them less under Democrat administrations than under Republican ones.
So why should we accept further restrictions on legal gun ownership, when current experience tells us violations of the current laws are not prosecuted? This is a great question for Duke Nukem, Eric Swalwell, and every other candidate calling for nationwide restrictions on guns. However, the short answer is law-abiding gun owners should not accept any further infringement. The virtue signaling gun grabbers don’t even take their own laws seriously.
