Around the middle of President George W. Bush’s 2nd term, there was a rapid shift in the way politicians and mainstream media handled stories regarding Muslims and Christians. The shock of the 9/11 terrorist attacks had faded and a “great threat” of Islamophobia had been identified. The press and many politicians on both sides of the aisle, though mostly Democrats, began a type of public relations campaign to reverse the trend. It was a good thing, a healing thing.
But, as with so many things in American politics, balance was only achieved for the briefest of moments before they kept going. And going. And going. Through the Obama administration, the complete reversal in sentiment was achieved in spectacular fashion. Then, the election of President Trump galvanized the left to form the new normal that we’re seeing now. Conservative activist Patricia Dickson nailed how this new normal has manifested in today’s society in a single sentence:
“Essentially, the left’s rule is that nothing bad — no matter how true — may be said about Muslims or Islam and nothing good — no matter how true — may be said of Christians or Christianity.” – Patricia Dickson

We’ve seen this with crystal clarity in the last month following terrorist attacks against Muslims in Christchurch and Christians in Sri Lanka. Leftists famously jumped on the mosque attacks, labeling them as attacks against Muslims. But their response to the Sri Lanka attacks were much more muted. Many refused to even mention the word “Christian,” instead calling the victims “Easter worshipers.” Meanwhile, the fact that the terrorists were Muslims was downplayed or even ignored.
I wish I could say this is the worst of it. I wish we’d reached the pinnacle of covering for Muslims and covering up Christians, but it’s only going to get worse if we don’t reverse course immediately. As we’ve seen in Europe, the governments and much of the media do everything they can to hide any crimes committed by their new Islamic populations infused during the Middle East migrant crisis. Meanwhile, they barely mention Christianity at all. It’s a bit different there, though. The church is not attacked in Europe nearly as much as it’s attacked here. That might sound like good news, but it’s based on complacency. In Europe, the Christian church is barely present. They don’t get attacked because they’re no longer considered a threat.
America needs honest coverage and honest conversations about religions and how they’re politicized. Christians do good things and bad things. Muslims do good things and bad things. If every action, good or bad, was called based on reality and not through the filter of a political agenda, we’d be just fine. But how things are handled by the press and politicians are affected by the religion in question.
As Dickson noted, the biggest thing missing in how the left handles situations, good or bad, is the truth. They determine their truth by how religions fit in their agenda. It’s all about narrative.
If we continue to let the left cover up anything bad done by Muslims and anything good done by Christians, our nation will soon look like Europe with Islam dominant and the church made impotent. Truth must prevail.
