It happens about 50% of the time any time a right-leaning journalist gets a hold of a socialist candidate, or if a heckler makes it into a rally. They have this “gotcha” question that is supposed to make the poor, stupid socialist crawl under a rock – probably someone else’s rock – and assume the fetal position until the bad question goes away. And every time it’s asked, it doesn’t work. Why? Because the question is stupid.
“Tell me, Mr. or Mrs. Socialist, if you are so big on taxing the rich, and you’re rich, why don’t you pay more in taxes voluntarily?”
In their minds, the questioner thinks, “BOOM!” In reality, it’s an opportunity for any socialist candidate worth their weight in rhetoric to dismiss and/or dismantle the premise of the question with very little effort. In a worst-case scenario, they avoid the question. This isn’t helping the cause of exposing socialism because nobody who is considering supporting socialism would pay more than they must even if they believe they should be paying more than they are.
There are so many great questions to ask people who believe in socialism. This is not one of them, yet it somehow became popular.
Let me illustrate the stupidity of the questions with a stupid analogy. I live in California. I believe the law should be changed to prevent motorcycles from “splitting” lanes. It’s currently illegal in most states for a reason. It’s dangerous. There are plenty of bad drivers behind the wheels of cars and behind the handlebars of motorcycles. Driving through Los Angeles during rush hour (which is pretty much 24/7, or so it seems) is a pain in the butt. That’s why when I drive my motorcycle, I split lanes. I wish I weren’t allowed to, but I’m not going to sit in traffic under the hot sun for hours when I can obey the current law even if I don’t agree with it.
See, I promised a stupid analogy and I delivered.
Any time someone asks a socialist this question, it reminds me of the part in The Truman Show where the guy pops out of the gift box and thinks he’s spoiled everything by telling young Truman it’s all a television show. He’s so proud of himself as he’s being carried off the set, but in the end it makes him look like a fool while Truman was unscathed.
Let’s focus on the stupidity of socialism itself. There’s no need to try to shame socialists because that’s a futile effort. If they were capable of feeling shame, they wouldn’t be socialists in the first place.
