Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. – Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)
One of the most confusing teachings for Christians is this one, which on the surface seems so easy to comprehend. The reason that it can be confusing is because we’re taught to be sanctified in our minds and yet here we’re told that we aren’t to lean on our own understanding. These concepts are not contradictory. It indicates that there is a difference between what we know in our minds to be true and the way that we understand things. This is not a call to stop thinking. It’s a call to trust what the Lord has put in our minds, particularly through the teachings of the Bible.
The Bible interprets the Bible. When we can’t understand something, it is through further reading that clarity can be found. Prayer, fasting, and reading the Bible regularly are the keys to advancing what we know is already in our hearts.
