When a member of the House of Representatives receives a rebuke from their own party for irresponsible words, standard operating procedure on Capitol Hill is to go under the radar for a bit until the controversy dies down. Representatives Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has chosen to take the opposite approach, doubling- and tripling-down on her antisemitic stances to the point that another rebuke from Democratic leaders appears to be on her horizon.
Is she just a glutton for punishment or is there a strategy behind her actions? Unfortunately, it’s the latter. She knows exactly what she’s doing.
To understand her goals, we have to examine the trends of the Democratic Party itself. The leftward lurch of the party has been well documented and reiterated in recent weeks by the stances taken by their early presidential candidates. This is no longer the party of compassion and tolerance they pretended to be for decades. The new Democratic Party is driven by hate, divisiveness, and a deep-seeded anti-Americanism that relies on conflict against President Trump to push their hidden narrative. They have become a parody of themselves, fighting intolerance by being intolerant, opposing violence by inciting violence, and embracing radical ideas simply because they’re radical.
I’ve seen a dangerous shift in the way leftists view the world as I engage with friends I once regarded as “sensible progressives.” One friend in particular who I thought was starting to understand the necessity and value of capitalism shocked me when he declared he loved every word her heard from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Keep in mind that just four or five years ago, we were having a nice discussion about how his views from college have been changing since he graduated. Upon joining the real world and fighting to get his show on television, he realized why capitalism made sense. The idea that he deserved things because he wanted them was replaced by the truth of earning things by working hard for them.

Now that he’s successful, he’s ready to embrace socialistic ideas once again. His reasoning: AOC inspired him to “demand better” even if it seemed impossible. I was a little shaken, not because she brought back his former leftism but because his reasons were based on an inspiring individual rather than a series of lucid ideas.
I know this because I made the mistake of asking him the unanswerable question, “How is she going to pay for it?”
What followed was the worst thing I could have heard from an intelligent friend.
“I don’t care,” he said, and the wasn’t an ounce of concern or regret in his face.
This mentality is emerging as the common bond between all of the newfound craziness in the Democratic Party. The base truly doesn’t care whether something is possible. They don’t really care if any of these ideas will actually work. What’s worse is they don’t care if the claims made by Ocasio-Cortez, Omar, Beto O’Rourke, or Elizabeth Warren are even true.
Truth is relative to the modern day hyper-leftist. That should terrify us all.
The reason Omar will continue to express her antisemitic views regardless of what her party’s leaders do to her is because the growing base of people who are falling for her charms will only continue to support her if she doesn’t back down.
In many ways, they are pulling from President Trump’s playbook. The more outrageous an idea, the more the base will support it. How many Trump supporters believed him when he repeatedly said Mexico was going to pay for the wall? Now they’re doing logical gymnastics to say Mexico is paying for it through the trade deal he negotiated.
No, they’re not, and if anyone tries to tell me that’s what he was saying all along on the campaign trail, I’ll regrettably classify them in the same category as Omar’s rabid fans who say she’s not antisemitic.
It’s not her message that’s resonating and making people like her. It’s her defiance that endears her to her base, and no matter what message she gives them, they’ll always see her as being correct.
