This is really a shocker. In 2016, many on the right fell in love with Donald Trump, despite serious misgivings. But nobody ever believed a hard-leftist like Sen. Dianne Feinstein would warm up to President Trump.
In what SFGate called a “political love-fest,” Feinstein spoke to a sold-out Herbst Theater crowd for an hour-long “conversation” with former Rep. Ellen Tauscher. The 850 people in attendance paid to hear liberal sweet-nothings whispered in their ears. And then, toward the end, Feinstein hurled a grenade.
“The question is whether he can learn and change,” Feinstein told the crowd at the Commonwealth Club event. “If so, I believe he can be a good president.”
Stunned silence, followed by “No’s,” hisses, and scattered boos.
“We’ll have to see if he can forget himself enough and have the type of empathy and direction the country needs,” she said.
Contrast that with her previous statements:
March 18: “I think he’s gonna get himself out.”
June 16: Feinstein “is done pulling punches when it comes to Donald Trump.“
Watch for Trump to respond favorably to Feinstein’s nice-talk. That’s how he is. To date, Trump’s worst vitriol has been reserved for his own party. In general (and with exceptions), he’s left the Democrats alone.
One thing seems certain: With a group of we-can’t-agree-on-the-weather, do nothing Republicans in Congress, Trump might get more done with Democrats. Perhaps Feinstein senses this and is playing her best card. And yes, that’s a crying shame.
