I believe that breaking the story on pandemic nursing home deaths was one of the most important things I have ever done. I wrote an extensive series breaking down the numbers state by state, and focusing on particular facilities, exposing the policies behind the death toll, and the officials responsible. The public debate over the pandemic became segmented in ways that made it impossible to discuss what happened in nursing homes. The only people who cared were the ones who had lost loved ones.
And after all these years, the sheer political callousness of it takes my breath away.
