Disgraced former Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein had many friends in high places. One of those friends had just finished losing the 2016 presidential election when her long-time friend and supported needed a favor. That’s when Hillary Clinton’s publicist, Nick Merrill, reached out to journalist Ronan Farrow in an effort to kill the exposé on a sampling of Weinstein’s various sexual misconducts that would be printed in The New Yorker.
Farrow’s book, “Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies, and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators,” is due out on October 15. In it, Farrow reports that he received an email from Merrill that said his “big story” was “a concern for us.” At the time, Farrow was working on a different book on foreign policy and wanted to land an interview with the former Secretary of State on the subject.
While Clinton was quick to denounce Weinstein following the article’s release and offered to donate the $26,000 he’d donated to her various political campaigns, it’s clear she did not want the story to ever see the light of day. The phrase “catch and kill” refers to a practice where people buy the exclusive rights to a story, then bury it so it never reaches the public. Clinton’s team seems to have fallen just shy of that charge as early indications show no attempts to pay for the story itself. We’ll know more when the book is released.
As the Daily Caller notes, Weinstein’s troubles have been well document since the story broke:
Weinstein Tried Using Credit With Hillary Clinton To Kill Ronan Farrow’s Weinstein Story, Book Says
The New Yorker published Farrow’s Weinstein story on Oct. 10, 2017, and the story detailed a 10-month investigation by Farrow. Thirteen women accused Weinstein of sexually harassing or assaulting them, the article reads. Farrow’s book, available Oct. 15, delves into the cover-up attempts that he discovered during the investigation.
The Weinstein Company fired Weinstein in October 2017 and authorities arrested him in 2018 on rape and sexual misconduct allegations. Prosecutors indicted him for a third time in 2019 and Weinstein’s trial is expected to be in January 2020.
Clinton has been in the spotlight lately as rumors circulate she may attempt another run at the White House. With former Vice President Joe Biden slipping in the polls and no moderate Democrats within striking distance of frontrunner Elizabeth Warren, a third Clinton run could be coming. It’s clear that she wants to do it, but do Democrats have an appetite for it? Probably not.
During the height of the #MeToo downfall of Harvey Weinstein, Hillary Clinton was able to keep out of the spotlight as she distanced herself from the predator. But before the story broke, it appears she scrambled to protect him.
