Axios published a story this morning about a group of Trump supporters trying to raise money to dig up dirt on journalists. Under normal circumstances this would have me wrinkling my nose with disgust. However, nothing about our political discourse has been normal for the last ten years or so. And Hillary Clinton losing in 2016 turned the heat up to eleventy. This has increased activities related to a cancel culture aimed at deplorable Trump supporters.
We have had almost constant protests, bands of armed thugs in Portland beating journalists and others without consequences, people harassed in restaurants and at their homes and Hollywood starts calling for blacklists of their peers who disagree with them. But the real problem is white supremacy or something.
Meanwhile, a Twitter account tweeting the personal details of regular citizens who have made donations to Trump is still tweeting. Thanks Joaquin Castro and Debra Messing. If any of these individuals is hurt, fired or destroyed personally, that’s on you and the entire cancel culture the far Left has supported vigorously. The chances Twitter will take action are slim to none in my estimation. The excuse will likely be the information is “publicly available”. So much for trust and safety.
According to the article, the group of Trump supporters is looking to raise $2 million dollars to fund this effort. The goal is to discredit members of the mainstream media using friendly news outlets to distribute their findings. This effort was first reported by the New York Times as a loose association of individuals aiming their efforts at the members of the media. According to Axios, that exposure formalized the effort which is now attempting to raise funds.
The initial response from the Times was rich. The paper has participated in the pile on of private citizens such as Joe the Plumber to the Covington kids. Yet, somehow they truly believe journalists are a special class of people exempt from the very same tactics they have used to go after people with far less power. How adorable.
I guess my basic question is how long did the Left and the mainstream media think the other side of the aisle was just going to sit there and take it? Media Matters has been employing these tactics for years. A 501(c)3, they regularly engage in activist tactics to silence those they disagree with. In the last twelve months, individuals they have targeted through sympathetic media outlets include Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham and Ben Shapiro and The Daily Wire staff. Yet MMFA still maintains their not-for-profit status.
This is a terrible trend. However, the side that decries how divisive the President is really needs to take a long look in the mirror. The Left’s nationwide tantrum since 2016 has come to a natural conclusion. Their political opponents have stepped up to attempt a counter movement. The new rules the Left established are leading to a game of mutually assured destruction. While it is nothing I wish to participate in, the reason it is happening is apparent to anyone with moderate analytical skills and a sliver of intellectual honesty.
The solution would be pretty simple. Everyone could just knock it off. Decide that maybe it’s more important that we can all live together in relative calm than it is to ruin our political opposition. It is pretty clear that is not likely to happen. If anything it will escalate in the run up to 2020. And who knows what that will mean after the election results are tallied because one side is going to lose.
