The narrative from leftist media over the past few months has been that asylum seekers usually show up for their hearings. Even a few right-leaning publications echoed this sentiment based on cumulative statistics over the years. But looking at the current crisis in which tens of thousands of asylum seekers are applying every month, the old narrative blows up.
According to acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan, 90% of asylum seekers do not show up for their hearing and final orders of removal in absentia are filed.
In a recent hearing before the Senate, McAleenan revealed this shocking fact in an exchange with Senator Lindsey Grahama (R-SC).
“It depends on demographic, the court, but we see too many cases where people are not showing up,” McAleenan said. “Out of those 7,000 cases, 90 received final orders of removal in absentia, 90 percent.”
“90 percent did not show up?” Graham asked.
“Correct, that is a recent sample from families crossing the border,” McAleenan said.
Democrats will likely point to it being a “recent sample” and cry foul, but isn’t what’s happening now really what’s important? In a crisis like this, we shouldn’t be looking at historical data to determine the extent of the problem. We need to look at the problem at hand. The border situation isn’t new, but the extent and severity of the problem is definitely different from how it’s been in the past.
One must be either blind or willfully ignorant to not realize the vast majority of asylum seekers are not evading persecution. They’re looking for American prosperity and free stuff and they’ll break the law to get it.
