THIS is how you use tariffs.
I have long been an opponent to tariffs. They’re the government’s way of taxing the American people and American businesses, which is why Democrats had always adored them. Even Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised the President’s use of tariffs on China, a fact conveniently skimmed over by most conservative outlets.
But I’ve also always been a fan of using tariffs as a negotiating tool. And that tool was apparently handled masterfully by the President in his negotiations with Mexico despite outrage by Democrats (they generally only like THEIR tariffs) as well as an alleged uprising among some Republicans.
The President Tweeted:
“I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico. The Tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the U.S. on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended,” he said. “Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to….stem the tide of Migration through Mexico, and to our Southern Border. This is being done to greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States. Details of the agreement will be released shortly by the State Department. Thank you!”

The details will be interesting to read. We’ve already seen a ramp-up of action by Mexican law enforcement and the military in detaining illegal immigrants before they reach the southern border. We’ll soon see what else is up their sleeve.
From the Highway 185 Solution to holding asylum seekers in Mexico while they wait for their hearing in the United States, the possible ways Mexico can help slow the flow of migrants across the border are numerous.
It will be interesting to see if/how the Democrats will try to spin this as a negative. Making Mexico a partner in fighting illegal immigration instead of an opponent may be the best foreign policy move the President has made to date.
Most Republicans have been complacent. All Democrats have been outright complicit. Meanwhile, the President pulled a rabbit out of his hat that nobody saw coming a month ago. Can’t wait to read the details.
