On Monday, President Trump released a Presidential Memorandum calling for tighter restrictions on asylum-seekers. He gave Attorney General William Bar and acting-Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan 90 days to come up with a plan to implement changes.
The left predictably panned the news.
Seeking asylum is a right under U.S. and international law–not a privilege to pay for. The Trump Administration's baseless attacks on families leaving everything behind and fleeing unimaginable violence has reached a new, shameful low. https://t.co/lLVmTmGeCP

Most are latching onto the President’s request to charge a fee to asylum-seekers in order to apply. I won’t deny that it’s an odd aspect of the memorandum, one that was certainly going to draw the ire of the left and even some from the right. But I believe it’s a bluff, one designed to soften the edges of the rest of the memorandum. If his two chiefs “go against” the President and reveal a plan that does not include charging migrants an asylum application fee, it will be a “win” for the left.
Meanwhile, the real benefits from the plan will be realized.
No matter what restrictions end up being included in the final proposals, they are likely going to accomplish the real goal of the tightening: dissuading migrants from making the trip in the first place. The administration isn’t interested in making it harder for people in true and dire need to apply for asylum. But what’s happened over the last few years has been an increase in the number of people who take advantage of our broken asylum system. This problem has accelerated dramatically in recent months to the point that border patrol is stretched too thin and border cities are experiencing states of emergency.
This isn’t only about tamping down on migrants and asylum applications. It’s about letting border patrol do their most important job of keeping criminals, terrorists, and traffickers from entering the country or benefiting from others doing so. There’s a huge cottage industry in Mexico controlled by the cartels that “helps” people come up through Central America into the United States. They make money off the exploits while sexually victimizing the women and girls who seek their services.
Moreover, the gang infiltration into our country is getting ridiculous. MS-13 might draw all the headlines, but there are several dozen major transnational gangs operating on both sides of the border.
The left may weep for the migrants who will be forced to respect our sovereignty, but American citizens will be safer as a result. This should act as a win-win for everyone, but Democrats will likely remain unhinged on the issue.
