It was bound to happen. With all the controversy that constantly surrounds President Trump and with whole conservative organizations designed to thwart his reelection efforts, it was never a question of “if” but “when” someone would challenge him and “who” it would be. We now have answers. Former Massachusetts governor Bill Weld announced his candidacy today.
Weld ran in 2016 as the Vice Presidential nominee behind Gary Johnson. They lost.
Now, Weld is ready to take another crack at it, this time leading a ticket.
"Jake, I'm announcing that I'm running for President… as a Republican against the President in 2020."

If Weld were running in a year without an incumbent, he’d have a very hard time getting anywhere near the top of the polls. He’s lukewarm at best with his conservatism and has a history of bouncing back and forth between perspectives on issues.
Most notably, he endorsed Hillary Clinton in 2016, and while the staunch #NeverTrump group of conservatives may have embraced this notion, a majority of those who opposed Trump in the primaries begrudgingly accepted him as the candidate to defeat Clinton. If they hadn’t, it’s very likely she would be President today.
But Weld may actually be doing the President a favor. Those with more name recognition like John Kasich have considered running in the GOP primaries as well. Weld is a weaker candidate, but his presence early on declaring his intention may prevent better challengers from emerging.
“I’m here vouching for Mrs. Clinton, and I think it’s high time somebody did.” – Bill Weld, 2016
This is good news for the President as it might prevent serious contenders from trying. The #NeverTrump crowd will try to cheer and prop him up, but they won’t get far. Weld is not a serious contender.
