There are many triggering factors that can make people act irresponsibly, especially when it comes to politics. Today’s primary trigger for Democrats is the name “Trump” and that goes for anything on which his name is attached.
Unfortunately, the desperately needed wall for our southern border has the President’s name deeply embedded into it which is triggering a majority of Democrats to oppose it against common sense and the safety of American citizens.
An article on left-leaning Washington Post highlighted two stark realities: the surge of around 2000 people crossing the border illegally every day is a real concern and Democrats are willing to ignore it as long as the solution offers President Trump a political win:
After years of Trump’s dire warnings, a ‘crisis’ has hit border but generates little urgency
With parts of the federal government shut down over what has morphed into the defining symbol of Trump’s presidency, administration officials are clamoring louder than ever. Only this time, they face a bona fide emergency on the border, and they’re struggling to make the case there’s truly a problem.
Record numbers of migrant families are streaming into the United States, overwhelming border agents and leaving holding cells dangerously overcrowded with children, many of whom are falling sick. Two Guatemalan children taken into U.S. custody died in December.
Sure, the authors danced around the subject as best they could while not abandoning all journalistic integrity, but they couldn’t avoid making the case for the wall even if their own rhetoric opposed it. People are streaming across the border in places where there is no wall because… there is no wall. As the President and many Republicans have noted, this crisis that’s putting both migrants and American citizens at great risk could be dramatically reduced if we made it harder for them to cross. The wall would do the trick.
It’s important to note that I am not in favor of using eminent domain to build the wall. Those who are unwilling to sell their land to the government for the wall have the right to do so. We build around them. Their right to private property is not one I would be willing to take away.
Another important note is that I do not believe the wall is the most effective way to handle the problem. Advances in border security technology just in the last year have changed the calculus on the wall tremendously. But since a technological solution, a “virtual wall,” is not being discussed at this point, I’ll happily support the best alternative which is the President’s proposed steel slat barrier.
If President Obama had requested funding for a border wall, he would have gotten it with bipartisan support. The fact that it’s President Trump wanting to build the wall is clear evidence that this is about politics, not morals or budgets or whatever other excuses the Democrats are throwing out. That’s how Washington DC works (or fails to work).
But the real concern here is that many thoughtful, otherwise lucid Americans are opposed to the border wall simply because it’s President Trump’s border wall. They don’t have the excuse of political expediency to justify their choices. As ludicrous as it sounds, they’re willing to oppose something that will benefit them, keep their families safer, and prevent the humanitarian crises that are brewing on both sides of the border as a result of not having a wall. While there really are millions of Americans who now believe in opposing our own sovereignty as a nation by pushing for open borders, the multitudes who are against the wall are mostly comprised of people who simply don’t like the name that would be slapped on it.
Opposition to the wall is just opposition to Trump. I have to believe that because the alternative suggests there are over a hundred million Americans who no longer believe in the sovereignty of our nation. Republicans might think that’s true, but it can’t be.
