It’s quite unpopular to post to a conservative website in support of a Democrat, even one as moderate as Joe Manchin (D-WV). I don’t support Manchin, but there’s one factor that could be taken into account that might make Republicans quietly root for him. Then again, it should probably be dismissed as overthinking it.
Nevertheless, here it is. A Joe Manchin victory in his Senate race that coincides with Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Joe Donnelly (D-IN) losing would mean that the Democrats in swing states who voted against President Trump’s Supreme Court Justice pick Brett Kavanaugh lost while the lone Democrat to listen to his constituents won.
If that’s the scenario that plays out, the President and Republicans will have a prime example to use in future close fights in the Senate. If Manchin loses and/or the other swing state Senators win, then Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will be able to go to his caucus with an example of how it didn’t help Manchin and/or hurt Heitkamp or Donnelly.
Yes, I’m probably overthinking it. Then again, I’m also correct in how the narrative would play out on Capitol Hill and the White House in the future. By no means am I rooting for Manchin, but it would be Pyrrhic victory for the Democrats.
