The battle for the House of Representatives is our biannual sideshow. It’s always contentious. It’s never boring. It’s occasionally even meaningful. The upcoming election just got a lot more interesting thanks to Michael Cohen’s guilty plea and confirmation he paid off women to stay quiet about extramarital affairs they had with President Trump before the election.
Now more than ever, they have ammunition to invoke impeachment as an actual possibility… if they can get the House.
Democrats will use this in fundraising efforts. They’ll hit their supporters with a viable path through which they can rid the nation of President Trump. It’s almost unfathomable that they can succeed to actually remove him, but it will play well for raising money nonetheless.
As for Republicans, they may do the same thing from the opposite perspective. They may call on their base to get active in an effort to protect the President. It would be risky, but at least a handful of campaigns will invoke the President’s protection in an effort to get their voters energized. In other words, they’d be banking on goodwill towards the President and his agenda, something that may be a bit more gray in the eyes of conservatives than Republicans realize.
The threat, albeit mostly toothless, is already making headlines:
‘It’s the only excuse they’ll need’: Legal blows fuel impeachment fears
One Republican lawyer close to the White House worried that Cohen – with his unique access to Trump’s history of business dealings and scandalous personal entanglements – could ultimately prove more damaging to Trump, and give Democrats fodder for impeachment if they take the House in November. “It’s the only excuse they’ll need,” the lawyer said. “And believe me, they won’t need much of an excuse.”
The sheer force of the two stories breaking within minutes of each other left an unavoidable impression that the walls are closing in on a president facing serious accusations of wrongdoing, leaving some to worry what Trump will do next.
At this point the only way the President can avoid being connected to Cohen’s actions is if they can demonstrate it was done on his behalf but without his knowledge. That would mean he’d basically have to admit he committed adultery. If he continues to deny it, most will not be able to give him the benefit of the doubt even if they have thus far.
My Take
Told you so.
I usually hate saying those three words, but after great GOP candidates got shafted by the daft Republican base, all I can do is shake my head. None of this should be a surprise to anyone. Of course this lying narcissist cheated on his wives. Of course he paid for them to be hushed. Of course his is now the moral representation of our nation.
If anyone expected anything from Trump other than scandal and shame, they deserve the shame we’re all going through as a result of this poor choice. I’m glad we didn’t get President Hillary. I’m saddened that the price we paid to avoid her will likely turn out to be the “blue wave” so many conservatives fear.
