When allegations were first made against Senate candidate Roy Moore, most pundits assumed he was dead in the water. Republican Senators immediately backed away. The President was silent. Endorsements were pulled. It seemed as if one of the most popular men in Alabama politics had messed up his political career four decades before it reached its pinnacle.
Enter Doug Jones, Democratic candidate for Senator. He and his campaign decided to make it interesting. What has followed over the last month has been snafu after snafu from lying about votes being made public to calling for Moore’s accusers to be believed despite having fought a girl who claimed to have been sexually assaulted when she was 15-years-old.
The latest example of poor campaign judgment comes in the form of a racially charged campaign flyer they sent to black communities:

The only reasonable explanation is that their information indicates they’re going to lose so they need to get desperate. Alabama, a conservative state, would normally be considered safe for Republicans, but the accusations against Moore have done their damage. Apparently, the Jones campaign doesn’t think the accusations did enough damage, so they’re getting creative with how they plan on getting the vote out. This could very easily backfire, as Michael Harriot at The Root notes:
A Racist Flyer Might Cost Doug Jones The Election Because The Entire Democratic Party Is Trash
The above photo is not a stock photo or an image created by The Root’s art department. It is an actual flier circulating around from the Doug Jones for Senate Committee in his run against Elmer Fudd wannabe and schoolgirl aficionado Roy Moore for Alabama’s Senate seat, and it has upset black voters across Alabama.
Someone, probably a white man, thought that image would resonate with black people and motivate them into getting out the vote. It’s as if black people were considering voting for the child molester until some brilliant strategist posited: “What if he was black, though?” The flyer is reductive in its oversimplification of the black mind as only caring about black issues. While it might not be racist, it is certainly racist adjacent.
It is also the Democratic Party.
