There will always be bad movies. For some reason, Hollywood can’t prevent itself from putting out movies like Suicide Squad or The Last Airbender. In fact, they’re planning on a sequel to the latter. No, really.
There’s another type of movie that’s actually worse than a bad movie. It’s the “passable movie,” a film that’s done with barely enough quality to keep it from being considered bad. The problem with passable movies, which most coming out of Hollywood are nowadays, is that they reward filmmakers and stars for mediocre work. When movies like the all-female Ghostbusters does three times better than Manchester by the Sea in ticket sales, what incentive does Hollywood have to focus on quality?
This video by Nerdwriter highlights the “epidemic” of passable movies. I’d like to take it a step further and make a call-to-action. It’s tempting to watch movies because we have nothing better to do, but it’s time we make a concerted effort to stop doing that. If a movie is mediocre, don’t see it. Let it go. Hold out for better movies. Don’t let Hollywood continue to get away with putting out garbage.
