Four American soldiers were ambushed and killed in Niger, a place most Americans couldn’t find on a map*. The soldiers had names and families.
Sgt. LaDavid Johnson, Staff Sgt. Bryan Black, Staff Sgt. Jeremiah Johnson, and Staff Sgt. Dustin Wright. Black and Jeremiah Johnson were assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group, and their bodies received a heroes’ somber return to Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C. Dustin Wright was from Lyons, Georgia, which is not too far from my home. I live in a military town, and people very close to me have deployed in harm’s way.
Did the press honor these soldiers? No.
They focused on President Trump calling the families of the dead soldiers. They knew Trump would get defensive. They knew he’d try to play “whatabout” games or react in a way they could exploit. They knew that some of the families were not Trump supporters and would make a good story. They exploited the situation to make the president look bad, and participated in a dishonoring of the lives of American professional special forces soldiers.
The media was right. Trump fumbled. He reacted badly. There’s no excuse for it–the man is ill-prepared for the burdens of office, especially the burdens of dealing with grieving families and people who may be angry with him. Worse, Trump tried to pass off responsibility to Gen. John Kelly–who he claimed Obama never called when his own son was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. That turned out to not be quite true (Obama met with Kelly personally, we would be expected with a senior general).
But make no mistake, the media used the situation to make their case: that Trump is a bad president.
The country is fed up with this constant drumbeat.
A recent poll by Politico and Morning Consult shows that 46 percent of all voters think the media makes up stories about Trump. Even 35 percent of Democrats believe the press makes up stories. 85 percent of Trump supporters believe the press makes up stories. Those of us who watch the press and politics know for a fact the media plays fast and loose with unnamed sources, hearsay and rumor, and spoon-fed gossip from the president’s enemies within the government.
Poll: 46% think media invent stories about Trump – Axios
That 46% is largely divided on partisan lines — 76% of Republican voters think media make up stories about Trump while only one in five Democrat voters think that, a Politico and Morning Consult poll shows. Those who strongly approve of Trump’s job performance are very likely (85%) to think the media makes up stories.
Contrast this with the liberation of Raqqa. The international and European press are reporting it as a victory over ISIS. American press is mum, or worse–complaining that Raqqa suffered damage breaking ISIS’ back. Seriously?
Jon Gabriel showed in two charts what ISIS has lost since 2015 and what the Trump administration has done since Jan. 20.
Changing the rules of engagement and letting the military do what it does best wins wars. But the media doesn’t want to report on Trump’s wins. They want to report on his failures.
Raqqa Falls, ISIS Reels | Ricochet
Osama bin Laden famously said, “When people see a strong horse and a weak horse, they will naturally want to side with the strong horse.” These days, ISIS is looking more like a dead horse. US-led forces have liberated Raqqa, the so-called capital of the terror group. Mop-up operations continue, but the city is swarmed …
They want him to fail.
*Niger is in west-central Africa, just east of a landlocked country called Burkina Faso. I know this because our family sponsors a child in Burkina Faso through Compassion International. Otherwise, I’d also be ignorant of African geography.

Trump: Congresswoman ‘totally fabricated’ my response to Miami Gardens soldier’s widow | Miami Herald
President Donald Trump accused a Miami-Dade Democratic congresswoman Wednesday morning of lying about his response to a fallen soldier’s widow — that “he knew what he signed up for” — and said he had proof of the conversation. She had mentored Johnson as part of her signature 5000 Role Models project that provides educational opportunities for young African American males. He said what he said and he needs to call her and say he’s sorry and go on and run the country before he takes us to war.
