Politicians, mostly those on the right, consistently decry “big government” and claim that they’ll make government shrink. As a proud member of the Federalist Party, I wholeheartedly embrace the idea of limiting government, but the current batch of politicians give me no hope that this will happen without a major change.
AEI’s Benjamin Zycher takes a look at why government continues to grow despite promises that they’ll shrink it. Amazing how many factors contribute to the growth of government. If we ever embrace the Constitution again, government will be forced to shrink. It may be the only way to make it happen.
Interestingly, Zycher notes the 17th Amendment as a cause. This should not go unnoticed. It’s difficult for most to understand that by allowing Senators to be selected by popular vote actually TAKES AWAY accountability from them to the states they’re supposed to serve.
