After a stunning defeat of what was considered a “safe” Republican Senate seat, the Grand Old Party needs to do some serious introspection before next year’s mid-term elections.
If the GOP wants to remain relevant it MUST change, but not in the way Steve Bannon would have it change. The establishment Republicans led by the likes of Mitch McConnell (R-KY) must go to the wayside in favor of younger, smarter, more principled leaders such as Ted Cruz (R-TX), Rand Paul (R-KY) and Mike Lee (R-UT), not old men who say stupid things like Roy Moore.
The Bannon method DOES NOT WORK. We saw that with Roy Moore. Being obnoxious and saying things that are openly racist such as “a lot of problems could be solved by getting rid of Amendments after the 10th” may play in some circles, but it doesn’t resonate with the majority of conservative voters who believe in freedom for all people.
The “Never Trump” movement is seen by many hardcore Trump supporters as simply establishment hacks who don’t like Trump because they can’t control him. Well, they’re partially right. That accounts for some of them. The rest of the Never Trumpers were conservatives who didn’t want to see the party dragged into the sewers with the likes of Steve Bannon, but who were equally fed up with the establishment who did nothing.
Hardcore Trump supporters and Never Trump conservatives (not establishment) are on the same side. We largely want the same things. We have just disagreed on how to get there. So, let someone get some differences out on the table.
I and others have been fair to Trump. We have given him credit where it is due, and criticism where it is also due. Others have not, and I would say to those Never Trump conservatives now, pull your head out of your rear end. It’s the PRINCIPLES and the ACTIONS that matter, not the man. If he does something good, give him credit for it. Criticizing President Trump for every little thing just makes us ignore you when you speak (looking at you Evan McMullin and Bill Kristol). If you’re on Twitter praising pro-abortion Socialists because you don’t like Trump, you’re doing this wrong.
Trump fans, not every single thing Trump does is part of some master plan. He’s not a genius. Sometimes, oftentimes, he’s just an overgrown petulant child who won’t take responsibility for his own actions and makes Obama look humble. When he does something conservative, by all means, give him credit! But when he acts like a child or does something foolish or supports a liberal cause, don’t assume it’s part of some master plan. Call him out! It’s the PRINCIPLES and the ACTIONS that matter, not the man. (Looking at you Sean Hannity and Bill Mitchell).
Now, let’s deal with some hard truths that MUST be faced before 2018 and 2020.
1) 2016 was a DISASTER.
I know. You’re all collectively flipping out right now and saying, “What?! We WON!”
Yeah, but HOW? You won with fewer votes than Mitt Romney lost with in 2012. Hillary won the popular vote. True, this doesn’t matter because of the electoral college, but it would be foolish to ignore it as well. Flip a few thousand votes in each of a few key states and we have President Hillary Clinton right now.
The bottom line is Trump didn’t win the Presidency, Hillary lost it. Talking heads keep commenting about how Trump’s base isn’t coming out to vote for his chosen candidates. Well, they are actually. There just aren’t anywhere near as many of them as the vocal minority on Twitter would have us believe. 62 million people didn’t vote for Donald Trump, they voted against Hillary Clinton.
2) The Democrats have their 2018 and 2020 strategies working already, and Trump doesn’t stack well against it.
Yep, sexual harassment and assault all the time. Some of the accusations made against Trump are just silly. I was naked under my robe for instance. Please spare me. But there is enough to hurt him. I wrote a couple months back why I believe Kamala Harris will be the Democratic nominee for President in 2020. That won’t be a good matchup for Trump. While I feel she is every bit as loathsome as Hillary Clinton, the general public hasn’t had 25 years to grow to hate her like they did with Clinton.
3) From here on out, the GOP must do a better job picking candidates, or it will disappear.
No more Donald’s Trumps or Roy Moores, but also no more Mitt Romneys or Luther Stranges. We have to do away with the binary, not I Lynch outside of the two-party system, but within it. Failure to do so will see the GOP disappear. The establishment has taken conservative votes for granted for far too long and that is what led to Trump.
At the same time, it’s is critical that conservatives use our brains and not emotions in selecting our candidates. No more picking the guy who mimics disabled reporters and rants on Twitter. No more picking the guy who waves his gun around at campaign rallies.
4) Join or die
Start working together or the losses the Democrats suffered under Obama I’ll look like nothing to the losses the GOP life suffer under Trump.
No ex-calling people who don’t like your candidate “liberals” or “cucks” (really with that one?). All the Bannon lovers who actually embrace the racism and antisemitism, yes, all 3,000 of you, goodbye. You have no place at the table.
We have to do all of these things or we won’t be hearing about Russian collusion anymore, we’ll be living IN Russia circa 1971. Get it together people.
