Imagine a famous magician who tours the world to enormous acclaim. He earns many millions of dollars, headlines in Vegas, and releases regular specials on Disney+ and Netflix. He has won Emmys, delivered TED Talks in Davos, and gets regular invitations to perform at the Vatican and the White House. His most celebrated illusion is a graphic, apparently bloody trick in which he saws a woman in half — and then, of course, she leaps up fully intact, waving a peacock feather, while everybody applauds.
But this magician has a secret. In fact, he really does saw women in half at every show. The body is quickly disposed of, no questions asked, by his stagehands, and the part that is an illusion is when another identically dressed woman with the same hairstyle leaps up in the dead woman’s place.
