Last summer, we reported on Dr. Johnson Varkey, a biology professor at St. Philip’s and the Alamo Community College District, who was fired from his job for teaching basic biological facts about chromosomes and reproduction.
Varkey had been a biology teacher for 20 years and was teaching the same basic biological facts when some students got up and walked out of his class and whined to the administration about gender stuff. Complaints against Varkey said he has engaged in ‘religious preaching, discriminatory comments about homosexuals and transgender individuals, anti-abortion rhetoric, and misogynistic banter’ and that his teaching ‘pushed beyond the bounds of academic freedom with [his] personal opinions that were offensive to many individuals in the classroom.’ The college fired Varkey.
