CNN journalist Jake Tapper demanded to know from Secretary of State Antony Blinken whether “capricious billionaire” Elon Musk should face “repercussions” for refusing Ukraine’s request last year to use Musk’s Starlink satellite internet system to attack the Russian fleet in Crimea. Tapper accused Musk of sabotage. Tapper was interviewing Blinken for his Sunday talk show State of the Union. Blinken, speaking from the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, danced around Tapper’s question, prompting Tapper to ask if he was afraid of offending Musk.
The controversy arose when excerpts from a new biography of Musk by Walter Isaacson were released this past week. Musk has aided Ukraine with Starlink for defense and civilian communications with a mix of direct donations by Musk and operations contracted through the U.S. government.
