House Republicans selected Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota as their latest speaker designate after five rounds of voting behind closed doors Tuesday, only for him to drop out hours later.
Emmer defeated Mike Johnson of Louisiana 117-97 on the fifth ballot after Byron Donalds of Florida, Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, Austin Scott of Georgia, Jack Bergman of Michigan and Pete Sessions of Texas were eliminated in the previous rounds of voting.
Two other candidates, Dan Meuser of Pennsylvania and Gary Palmer of Alabama, withdrew before the voting started.
Tuesday’s vote came exactly three weeks after the ouster of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), and in the wake of the doomed speakership bids of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).Both Scalise and Jordan dropped out of contention for speaker earlier this month after failing to garner enough Republican support to replace McCarthy .
