The Trump administration announced Sunday that it is eliminating 2,000 positions at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and placing nearly all remaining staff worldwide on administrative leave, according to the Associated Press.
The decision follows a ruling by US District Judge Carl Nichols, who allowed the administration to proceed with its plan to remove thousands of USAID employees. Nichols rejected efforts to extend a temporary stay that had been in place as part of an ongoing lawsuit filed by agency employees.
Notices informing USAID personnel of the decision were sent out and viewed by AP.
“As of 11:59 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 23, 2025, all USAID direct hire personnel, with the exception of designated personnel responsible for mission-critical functions, core leadership and/or specially designated programs, will be placed on administrative leave globally,” the notices stated. […]
