A new “caravan” of around 5,000 migrants, mostly Venezuelans and Central Americans, has begun advancing on the United States from Mexico, with marchers unwilling to wait to be issued so-called humanitarian visas.
Some Venezuelans in the caravan are not even pretending they are fleeing political persecution, still less war, telling Reuters they simply believe they will be able to get more money in the United States: “[T]he money we get, it’s not enough for us, and that’s why we’re going to the United States,” said one.
Venezuelans passed Mexicans as the number one group crossing America’s southern border illegally in September, perhaps encouraged by word President Joe Biden was moving to alleviate the cost burden they have been imposing on Democrat states like New York by awarding them work permits .
