I’m old enough to remember when every day in school began with the Pledge of Allegiance. In fact, I’d somehow assumed that this fine ritual still took place in American schools, until young people laughed in my face and informed me otherwise.
At my Catholic school, patriotic nuns from immigrant families used to lead us in the Pledge. One of them, Sister Alice, went further. She made sure to infuse in us a deep gratitude for the land of ordered liberty, religious toleration, and vast opportunity which had welcomed our ancestors. She reminded us all the time how very “blessed we are.”
Sister Alice taught us an old-fashioned patriotic poem. Like the prayers I learned in childhood, it still makes my eyes tear up. (That includes even prayers I couldn’t fully understand. I remember in third grade wondering why it was so impressive that the Virgin Mary was “mother of the Word Incarnate.” I thought at the time, “So she … coined a word?
