In an effort to appear to her mainland China puppetmasters that she’s cracking down on protesters, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam instituted a ban on masks on city streets to prevent protesters from hiding their identity. Anyone caught wearing a mask faces jail time and heavy fines. The protesters responded appropriately, taking to the streets in a massive rebuke to their government. The vast majority of protesters wore masks following the ban.
In a press conference, Lam said, “Hong Kong is not in a state of emergency.”
Clearly, she’s trying to put forward a face of control despite the turmoil that has engulfed her city for months. It’s reminiscent of a scene from the Naked Gun franchise.
The government is no longer in control in Hong Kong. It’s no longer a question of “if” but “when” Beijing will take over the crackdown and escalate the protests even further onto the international stage.
