A rare event happened today during the joint press conference with President Trump and Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö. He gave the NY Times a compliment.
Fox News chief White House correspondent John Roberts asked about a NY Times story that detailed how a staffer for Adam Schiff met with the whistleblower before the complaint was filed. The President said he was just handed a copy of the story, which he had in his hand during the press conference, and was very happy with both the question and the story. It’s unknown whether or not he had time to read it before entering the press conference, but the topic alone was enough to prompt a response.
According to the President, not only did Schiff know details about the complaint, but likely helped the whistleblower compose and file it. Some have speculated the complaint looks like it was written by a team of lawyers rather than a CIA analyst, which adds further circumstantial evidence to back the President’s accusation.
“It shows that Schiff is a fraud,” the President said even before Roberts finished asking the question. “I hate to say it’s the New York Times. I can’t believe that they wrote it. Maybe they’re getting better.”
Here’s the story:

“I think it’s a scandal that he [Schiff] knew,” the President continued. “I’d go a step further. I think he probably helped write it.”
The President, who has had a contentious relationship with the NY Times for years, even before being elected President, wasn’t shy about giving them kudos for breaking the story. If anything he was surprised they did, and his son echoed the same shock.
Just think how bad it really is for The New York Times to be the ones to actually break it instead of giving him a pass like they did with all his lies and false claims during the Russia Hoax. https://t.co/g3N9vH6zu1

Now, the question becomes how deep Schiff’s involvement was with the complaint, including the changes to the whistleblower form that seem to have happened as a result of the complaint. This will add a great deal of scrutiny to the entire premise of the impeachment inquiry and would explain why Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was so quick to reverse herself and launch the inquiry before the complaint was released.
Don’t expect a detente between the President and the NY Times any time soon, but it’s good they had a rare moment in which doing their job was more important to them than playing hoax-hustler for the Democrats.
