It’s a clever ploy on the surface. Democrats released a “compromise” on gun control today where’ in exchange for President Trump signing their universal background check bills, they’ll join him for a signing ceremony in the Rose Garden to mark this historic occasion. They’re playing to his desire for photo op moments and universal praise, hoping he’ll believe if he does this, more people will see him as a great leader.
It will have the opposite effect by showing he can be manipulated by the Democrats waving pomp and circumstance in exchange for breaches in our 2nd Amendment and privacy rights. This is ironic since universal background checks will also have the opposite effect from how they’re being billed. Instead of making us safer, they’ll actually make it more difficult for average American citizens to stay safe while opening the barn door for full-blown gun control, national gun registries, and eventual gun confiscations to take place in the not-so-distant future.
They think he’s a fool. They’re hoping he’s foolish enough to buy into their “olive branch.” Mr. President, if you read this, please do not fall victim to their scheming and manipulation.

No. A dumb photo op is not worth a gun registry. No. https://t.co/geZyNFmSIY

Universal background checks were prohibited by the Brady bill because allowing them would invariably lead to the nasty national gun registry. It’s not a question of if but when this will take place once universal background checks are made into law. Those who think it won’t happen are denying the reality that universal background checks are a de facto gun registry the moment they’re initiated. The information from current background checks are already stored and referenced. By making background checks universal and prohibiting American citizens from acquiring firearms without the government’s permission, the gun registry becomes inevitable.
Why? Because there will be no reduction in crimes as a result of UBCs. In fact, since people will be less capable of purchasing firearms, many will be in more danger from armed criminals as a result. As crime rises as a result of the UBCs, the left will say the problem is with guns that were purchased prior to their ineffective laws being passed. Therefore, the only plausible solution is to force law abiding Americans to register their guns regardless of how or when they were procured.
Criminals, of course, will not abide. Sure, they may get a few more months added to their sentence after they are caught committing crimes with their illegal firearms, but nobody’s going to think, “I would have murdered this person, but since I’d get six more months on top of my 30-year sentence thanks to UBCs, I better not do it.”
If President Trump falls for Chuck and Nancy’s ploy to get him signing their universal background check bill in the Rose Garden, he’s the fool they believe him to be. Universal background checks will not make us safer. They will have the opposite effect.
