Israel’s elections are just over a week away and most Americans are enjoying a collective yawn. Politics in Israel is not well understood nor properly covered by American press. This is by design; if more American Jews were made aware of the state of affairs on the ground in Israel, it would be harder for them to realistically embrace chants to end the “occupation” or call for a two-state solution.
At risk is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s seat. If his Likud Party is unable to win the most seats in the Knesset and show the ability to form a coalition government, it’s very likely the left-leaning Blue and White Party will push Benny Gantz into the Prime MInister’s office. This would be disastrous for the relationship the United States enjoys with Israel. Gantz isn’t opposed to the United States in general, but he’s nowhere near the ally Netanyahu has been.
Stability in the Middle East is the biggest challenge America faces with our relationship to Israel. They rely on us for military support as well as protecting them from the United Nations Security Council. We rely on them as a check against Iran as well as other lesser-threats such as Hezbollah and Hamas. Israel has done as much if not more to prevent the next 9/11 as the United States has done.
But this isn’t just about the United States protecting our own interests. Netanyahu represents the fastest path to achieving a sensible Middle East peace plan. The full-blown two-state solution embraced by Gantz runs counter to the Trump administration’s peace plan. Gantz would give away the farm and allow their (and our) enemies to gain a foothold that would be very difficult to upend. What little we know about the peace plan being put together by the White House is that it favors an economically robust “New Palestine” while allowing for the protections necessary to keep the specter of terrorism from fully forming again in the Middle East.
President Trump and Netanyahu agree on the vast majority of initiatives between the two nations. Gantz is more in the Hillary Clinton camp of diplomacy that yields more conflict with poor results. This is something few Americans seem to understand. War is constant with a weakened foreign policy stance, as President Obama demonstrated in his terms. The same holds true for Israel. Their security is based on strength, and Gantz wants to negotiate away that peace based on false promises from liars, just like President Obama did with Iran.
As patriotic Americans, we cannot sway the elections in Israel. If we could, we would certainly give Netanyahu the boost he needs to stay in the Prime Minister’s office. It’s going to be close. Keep your eyes open.
