Much of the focus on the three recent mass shootings has been pointed back towards El Paso following revelations that the Dayton gunman was an Antifa- and Satan-loving Democrat. This goes against the progressive narrative currently being circulated that white supremacy and President Trump are the reason for the escalation in gun violence. It’s why they’re completely ignoring the devastation in Chicago over the weekend as well.
But certain elements of the Dayton shooting will eventually be latched onto once the progressives in the Democratic Party and the media come back to gun control as their primary focus. Now that video and more details have been released regarding the shooting, it will behoove gun control advocates to point to Dayton despite the shooter’s political leanings for three reasons.
First, the firearm used by the shooter is the scariest of scary guns that fall under the left’s so called “military-style weapons” push. Not only was it the infamous AR-15, but it was a compact version that seems more like something out of a spy flick than a military weapon. As far as I can tell from images, it appears to be an AR-15 pistol with a 100-round double drum magazine. This is the leftists’ worst nightmare, one that can fire many shots quickly and doesn’t require reloading every few seconds.
Second, the fact that police were able to get to him in less than a minute reinforces their claim that law enforcement should have guns and there’s no need for an armed citizenry.
Third, even with police able to respond instantly, he was still able to kill nine and injure 26. This lends to the left’s position that guns like these aren’t for self-defense or hunting, though they willfully ignore that these guns defend citizens against a future oppressive government as well.
These three facts will be used by progressives to push gun control laws that could take the AR-15 off the market. I would be shocked if the double drum cartridge isn’t outlawed in Ohio as it is in many other states. And as they push these laws, there will be the incessant call for background checks even though police indicated the shooter had no known history that would have prevented him from owning a firearm.
But on that last point, there’s a caveat. The alleged shooter displayed violent tendencies documented in high school, in which he made a “kill list” and a “rape list.” He is also apparently part of a band that promotes violence, including raping and killing women as part of “pornogrind.” I am not supportive in any way of such heinous expressions of loathing and potential violence, but it’s hard to determine where to draw the line when it comes to taking tendencies and turning them into a likelihood of violent action that can be acted on by police.
We’re getting into precognitive law enforcement, a la Minority Report, in which people are incarcerated or their property is confiscated based on displays of behavior that increase the likelihood they’ll eventually be dangerous. This is the slipperiest of slippery slopes, one that threatens to start eliminating our rights immediately. And unfortunately, the President and many Republican lawmakers are pushing for such draconian techniques following calls for action from the left.
Now is the time for 2nd Amendment advocates to come together in a unified front. The sentiment is shifting in our nation because of these highly emotional tragedies. But that’s no excuse to infringe on our rights.
