It didn’t take long for Representative John Ratcliffe to feel the pressure from the media over his credentials to be Director of National Intelligence. Or, perhaps the better way to say it is the Trump administration felt the pressure and decided not to pursue the battle.
From a personality perspective Ratcliffe had all the right boxes checked. He’s aggressive and his experience on the Foreign Intelligence Committee would have served him well in learning the ins and outs of the job. But the press and Democrats demanded someone with more direct knowledge of intelligence. It’s not an off-base request, but it’s a shame that this had to go down the way it did.
Whoever the next nominee is, they had better come to the table with an impeccable resume. They need to be able to hop in with no on-the-job training. If Ratcliffe wasn’t considered qualified enough, few will be.
