Representative Ilhan Omar has some explaining to do. To date, she has only sidestepped and avoided questions surrounding the alleged marriage to her brother that may have led to immigration and tax fraud. If these allegations are proven true, her future in American politics may be over.
A member of “The Squad,” Omar has made headlines in her six months in office by posting anti-Semitic Tweets, pushing to abolish ICE, and pointing her fingers at every conservative in sight, calling them racists. But her history as well as her ideology may be catching up with her.
In her home district, polls have shown support for her have been dropping as multiple challengers have already stepped up to take her on in 2020. One America News spoke to Judicial Watch investigator Chris Farrell to discuss their inquiry into Omar.
Chris Farrell of the government watchdog group Judicial Watch says it’s time for Congress to investigate potential crimes tied to allegations that Minnesota representative Ilhan Omar may have married her biological brother.
“The lawmakers should abide by the laws and in this case Representative Omar appears to at least be somewhat conflicted if not in a position where she may have broken the law and that needs to be identified, examined, and explained,” Farrel said. “And there’s substantial documentation that raises very grave questions>”
Judicial Watch has submitted a complaint to the Office of Congressional Ethics. The complaint cites reports by investigative journalist David Steinberg which appear to show that representative Omar may have married her brother, Ahmed Elmi, in order to assist his emigration from the United Kingdom, which may have also assisted him in falsely qualifying for federally backed student loans. Additionally, tax returns submitted by Omar were filed as joint returns with a man who appears not to have been her husband at the time while she was married apparently to Ahmed Elmi.
“Representative Omar has has been asked repeatedly by various media outlets to explain or to sort of walk and talk her way through this progression over the years with the two husbands, the immigration, etc, and she has been quiet,” Farrell continued. “She has not met this in sort of a head-on way. There needs to be some sort of accounting and that’s why we went to the Office of Congressional Ethics.”
In its complaint, Judicial Watch calls the evidence substantially compelling and to date unrefuted and includes information gathered by Steinberg from public records, social media postings, genealogy databases, computer forensic analysis, and confidential sources within the Somali American community.
Farrell concluded, “The story is murky, but the reporters have gotten tremendous amount of documentation, public records, and it’s important to get this on the record because Congress has the responsibility, it really has the obligation to police itself.”
Prior to referral to the House Ethics Committee, the Independent Office of Congressional Ethics must make a determination to initiate a preliminary review process which can take up to 90 days.
The walls seem to be closing in on Omar. We can expect Democrats to circle the wagons. Even if it’s discovered she broke the law, they may continue to support her by calling our immigration laws racist. That’s the state of the Democratic Party today.
