The discovery and ongoing excavation of “Pilgrimage Road” in Jerusalem should be exciting and well-broadcast news, much like other major archaeological discovers in recent years. But it’s not only barely a blip on any news outlet’s radar. It’s also being suppressed. To understand why, we have to look at the history of the City of David itself.
The battle for Jerusalem has been raging for millennia. It has been occupied by half-a-dozen different peoples since King David made it the capital for the Hebrews over 3,000 years ago. Even in times of “peace,” as we’re technically in today, Jerusalem is still the primary reason for those who covet it to attack those who possess it.
The Jews have long staked claim to the city, but Palestinians say the city belongs to them. They say this knowing that for it to be true, they have to establish that their people have longer history than the Jews and a heritage that directly ties back to the city. This is why they call themselves “Palestinians” in the first place. By adopting the name “Palestine” for their nation, they hearken back to the Philistines who occupied much of the land of Judea and Samaria in ancient time.
But they must perpetuate a long-standing lie that has somehow continued to remain in textbooks and “historical” documents even today. This is particularly prevalent in the Muslim world which wants to deny Israel’s right to exist. As such, the lie they continue to tell is that the City of David was never actually a Jewish capital. In fact, they say it wasn’t a Jewish city at all. They acknowledge that Jews have been allowed to live there, but only as visitors. The real people who have always controlled Jerusalem are the Muslims… according to the Muslims.
This is, of course, a major problem considering they’ve only existed as a religious group since the 7th century AD. And therein lies the need to suppress information such as the discovery of Pilgrimage Road. Since it’s part of the historical record that many anti-Israel groups claim to be false, it reaffirms what many (perhaps a majority, perhaps not) of the world knows to be true, the the Jews have possessed Jerusalem since antiquity and hold the strongest rights to its ownership today.
When a large group of people deny that either of the Temples even existed in Jerusalem, it behooves them to deny any archaeological discoveries that confirm history. But Pilgrimage Road is real. That won’t stop people from denying it.
