Democrats and cats

Democrats and cats

There is a fundamental rule for Christians that we shouldn’t “major in the minors.” In other words, we shouldn’t debate how many angels can dance on the head of a pin when the Apostle Paul tells us that Jesus and the Cross are “of first importance.” (1 Corinthians 15:3ff)

The same ought to apply to politics. There it is called “message discipline.” Many of us argued that Donald Trump’s penchant for “punching back” often got in the way of his ideas and accomplishments. Yet, as Scott Adams notes, even in the middle of the noise, Trump is a master persuader, succeeding where the rest of us are simply bewildered.

Success for a politician or political party is (usually) achieving and maintaining a position of authority. This is achieved (generally) by persuading a majority of the relevant batch of voters that you most accurately reflect their goals and preferences. For most politicians, this involves convincing them to forget your past positions and believe the counterfactual that you have actually been their champion forever. As Paul Joseph Watson describes, politicians are actually Non-Player Characters in a video game striving to have the voter imprint his own identity on the NPC.

Democrats seem to be taking their NPC position to extremes, as exemplified by the new statute in New York outlawing the declawing of cats. As Tony Perkins notes,

“Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo seems incredibly concerned with animal cruelty. But when it comes to newborn babies? Not so much.

“The man behind the infamous light display for infanticide has apparently decided that it’s mean to declaw cats. Dismembering tiny humans, on the other hand, gets a hearty standing ovation…

“Funny, he didn’t seem to mind the inhumanity of leaving a perfectly healthy newborn abortion survivor to die—or the “cruel and painful procedure” that literally rips a living child to pieces.”

The incongruity of this is lost on the irony-deficient Left. It’s OK to literally cruelly dismember a living child who can feel pain, but a sub-human species having its toenails pulled is beyond the pale. Anyone who has had an ingrown toenail has suffered more pain than that, but the New York legislature has not seen fit to outlaw ingrown toenails.

This is another virtue-signalling exercise in majoring in minors. The major stances taken by the Left are so offensive to most sentient Americans that the Left sees it necessary to try to demonstrate that they are actually human(e). Leather sofas be damned!

For the rest of America, New York’s feline obsession is just Jerry saying that George is sending a message out into the world that, “I give up. I can’t compete in normal society. I’m miserable, so I might as well be comfortable.”
