Families are often the focus of the left’s calls to eliminate security at the southern border. They say there are bad guys that need to be apprehended, but most who try to come across are just families looking for better lives. But sometimes, these families are cover for smugglers to try to sneak drugs over. Such is the case Monday when a man tried to smuggle over $12,000 worth of methamphetamine while traveling with his pregnant wife and three children.
According to Customs and Border Protection:
At approximately 2 p.m., Blythe Station agents referred a 1997 Nissan Maxima for secondary inspection following a canine alert. Two adults and three children occupied the vehicle. A search of the driver revealed approximately 5.3 pounds of methamphetamine wrapped in cellophane around his waist. The narcotics have an estimated street value of $12,190.
The 31-year-old male Mexican national driver was arrested for controlled substance violations. His wife, a Mexican national lawfully admitted for permanent residence, and the couple’s children were released. The vehicle and narcotics were seized.
Meanwhile, lawmakers like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar are calling to abolish ICE and CBP. Their unhinged arguments are moot to anyone paying attention to what’s really happening at our southern border.
Are there innocent people who are harmed by the migrant surge? Yes. Does that mean we need to lighten security and stop deportations? Absolutely not.
So much attention is paid to the two most prominent problems with the border crisis that we often take our eyes off the other major challenge: drug smuggling. The focus is on the migrant surge of asylum seekers who are coming over illegally before trying to get caught and criminals taking advantage of limited CBP resources stuck handling the migrants. But the border crossings themselves are rife with human and drug smuggling. This is where the technology endorsed by both sides needs to continue to be pursued. We’re catching a lot of them, but until we can make it virtually impossible to smuggle anything at a port of entry, work must continue to improve.
The type of men who would put their pregnant wife and three children in danger for the sake of smuggling drugs across the border are not the people we want living in this country. We must remain diligent and fix the border crisis now.
