Senator Kamala Harris attacked former Vice President Joe Biden during the first Democratic debate and it worked wonders. She’s soaring in the polls, eclipsing Senator Elizabeth Warren to have a firm hold on the #3 spot on the depth chart. Now, Senator Cory “Spartacus” Booker is trying to get a bump of his own by going after Biden over racial issues.
It’s not working out very well for him.
Booker bashes Biden for comments on school segregation, says former VP is causing ‘pain’ and ‘frustration’
While Booker has been vocal in his criticism of Biden, it has been Harris would has captured most of the headlines following Thursday’s debate, where she attacked Biden’s decades-ago work with segregationist senators, making the point personal by explaining she was a member of only the second class of black children in California to be bused to school in an effort to force desegregation.
“That little girl was me,” Harris said directly to the former vice president in a moment that has since gone viral.
Instead of helping himself, his attacks have helped Harris’s numbers rise even further. On social media, his attacks are getting attached to Harris’s, as if he is the follower reiterating her points and promoting her message instead of his own.
In reality, Booker is not and has never been a real factor in the race. The New Jersey Senator has failed miserably at establishing himself in any way other than through intersectionality. But Harris is a woman, so her intersectionality credibility is naturally higher.
Booker has only one hope at relevance. He must put out policy proposals that separate him from the crowded field. As of now, nobody knows what he would do as President because his plans have been ambiguous at best. He’s not a great campaigner and an even worse fundraiser, so his only chance is to make news with his own perspectives, not carbon copies of Harris’s victim card. He just can’t play it as well as she can.
Of all the major candidates, Booker of Beto O’Rourke will likely be the first to go. Calling them “major” is an overstatement, considering the polls, but at least they’re not New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
