I have a surprising number of friends and relatives who are Democrats. Four of them are quite radical and there’s nothing I can do about them. The other dozen or so are more mainstream. They liked Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. They believe in amnesty, more social programs, and a woman’s right to abortion up to a certain point (usually around 20 weeks). But they don’t believe in reparations, abortion-on-demand, gun confiscations, or forcing 180 million people to switch to a government-run health insurance system.
Unfortunately for them, their current party leaders and nearly every presidential candidate is embracing the freedom-sucking tenets of socialism and the mind-numbing stupidity of communism.
The debates over the last two nights were eye-openers for many Democrats. I noticed something very different about these debates than the ones from 2008-2016. The applause lines were awkward the last two nights and nearly never brought a raucous response. Some drew crickets. Others drew cheers, but nothing compared to the mayhem that seemed to ensue in past presidential debates. It’s anecdotal, but I have a solid memory for these things and the reactions in the 2019 debates so far have been muted.
This new brand of the Democratic Party, one that is modeled after 2016’s version of Bernie Sanders and molded by today’s Elizabeth Warren, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the Justice Democrats, is nothing like the Democratic Party that put Clinton and Obama in the White House. Conservatives have been known to call their Democratic foes “radicals” or “extremists” in the past, but today, the words actually fit. Those who thought President Obama was a radical (I did) have been shown what true radical progressivism looks like in 2019, and it ain’t Obama. He was clearly a predecessor who opened the doors for the new radicals, but his policies aren’t palatable to them now.
Lest we forget, he ran in 2008 supporting marriage between a man and a woman. He fought to eliminate capital gains taxes for small business investors. He also claimed to be strong on border security. And he won.
In 11 years, with the lion’s share of the shift happening in the last three, the Democratic Party has gone from somewhat sensible and mostly sane to now being represented by senseless raving lunatics (based solely on their policies). The leftward lurch of today’s Democratic leaders has been the most extensive and rapid shift in ideology of a major political party since the nation was born.
Democratic voters, especially those who have voted blue for a while, have to be scratching their heads after watching last night’s debate. What happened to their party? How can they possibly all be in favor of ending private health insurance to one degree or another. Why are they offering free comprehensive healthcare to illegal immigrants while forcing American citizens to pay for it? What makes them think they can buy votes by offering reparations?
Washington Post reporter Rachael Bade noticed the change.
Overheard while watching the debate just now: “I’m not sure I’m a Democrat anymore.” -Democrat next to me complaining abt how far left the party has moved

Ronald Reagan once said, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The party left me.” This is the case today for many lifelong Democrats who can barely recognize what they’re hearing from their leaders.
Socialism, communism, and extreme social justice have infected the Democratic Party. But voters are noticing. They’re asking questions. They’re scared. The radicalized version of the party has set sail. How many blue voters will jump ship?
