Fact-checking in the digital era has become more of an art than a science. The vaunted fact-checkers of the Internet have universally leaned left for some reason, perhaps because those who lean right can’t get their fact-checks to appear very easily in Google. That’s part of the current digital dystopia; if you think right, the internet thinks you’re wrong… at least the social justice warriors who control the gatekeeping tech giants.
CNN is part of the fake news fact-checking industry, which is why it should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone paying attention that their fact checking of the first Democratic debate yield plenty of confirmations and only a couple of Pinocchios. Unfortunately for Tim Ryan, his only two fact checks were called out as inaccurate.
Fact-checking the first night of the first Democratic presidential debate
Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan claimed that “the bottom 60% haven’t seen a raise since 1980.”
Facts First: This is incorrect. The bottom 60% have seen their income rise since 1980.
It’s unclear where Ryan is pulling this statistic from, but a 2018 report from the Congressional Budget Office says that the bottom 60% saw an increase in household income of 32% — adjusted for inflation — from 1979 to 2015.
Meanwhile the top 1% saw their income rise by 233%.
But that’s what one can expect from CNN. Admittedly, I used to watch them fairly regularly. It wasn’t because I necessarily liked their coverage or believed what they said, but it’s always good to get the perspectives of those who are ideologically opposed to you. Know thy enemy.
Conspicuously missing from the fact-checking was arguably the easiest one of all. Julian Castro invoked “Reproductive Justice” in one of his finest progressive moments, then flubbed it by saying he believes that transgender woman should have equal access to abortions. Except, that’s not possible. Transgender woman were born biological males, and currently science is incapable of helping them get pregnant, let alone abort that pregnancy.
The next few months are going to be painful to watch as leftist media outlets bounce back and forth between who to support and who to pan. They’ll do it, too. There’s no doubt in my mind that every journalist will pick favorites and then oppose those who stand in the way of their favorites. It’s natural. Despite the perception of unbiased reporting journalists have tried to maintain since the birth of the media, it’s simply not possible to prevent our ideologies and preferences from seeping in. They used to be able to hold it back in the past, but considering how openly biased the media is today, it’s unlikely to find anyone who doesn’t insert a little editorializing in every news report about the candidates.
This really did have the feel of the junior varsity warm up game before four of the top five contenders meet each other in Thursday night’s debate.
When you expect very little from a news outlet like CNN, it takes a tremendous amount of effort to be even more disappointing than expected. But CNN failed to disappoint as they played their bias unabashedly in their “fact” checks.
