New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is an idiot and is hopeful everyone else is as well. Let’s just go ahead and start with that premise and work our way down from there, following the same direction that his campaign and his presidential chances are heading.
Today, the mayor was trying to rally support for Miami International Airport employees to unionize. His speech was well received up until his parting words, “Hasta la victoria, siempre.”
The famous mantra of Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevara was unambiguously intended to reference the man. But apparently, de Blasio’s team doesn’t understand Miami. It may be popular for progressive social justice warriors to wear t-shirts donning the mass murderer’s image, but in Miami where a good chunk of the population fled Fidel Castro’s and Guevara’s iron grip in Cuba, the left’s icon isn’t seen the same way.
But hey, at least he got to speak Spanish!
De Blasio apologizes for quoting Che Guevara in Miami airport union rally
Before giving up the microphone to the next speaker, de Blasio blurted a quote from one of the most hated historical figures throughout Miami: “Hasta la victoria, siempre.”
The phrase — which translates roughly to “Ever on to victory!” — was a mantra for Guevara, who became one of Fidel Castro’s top lieutenants. Raul Castro uttered the quote on Cuban television when he announced to the world that his older brother had died.
Guevara is considered a murderous sociopath by Miami’s Cuban exile community, but has been treated by some leftists as a martyr and to some extent became a pop culture figure following his execution in Bolivia.
This is the moment in one’s presidential campaign where they have three choices: lie, justify, or abandon ship. He chose the first option as he scrambled on his tiny Twitter account to apologize and claim stupidity as his excuse. It’s a narrative that fits. He truly is unintelligent. But to utter those words that are so unambiguously attached to the man who murdered many Cubans and claim he didn’t know who he was quoting is a bit too stupid for even the mayor of New York City.
I only meant it as a literal message to the striking airport workers that I believed they would be victorious in their strike- BdB. (2/2)

In the whole scheme of things, it doesn’t really make a difference. He had no chance when he entered the race and despite some praise for last night’s debate performance, he’s a non-factor in the nomination process.
If there’s one thing we know for sure about Bill de Blasio’s flub, it’s that it demonstrates he’s either clueless or a blatant liar. Based on his history, I’d lay pretty good odds on both sentiments being accurate.
