Climate change is arguably the fastest way to get the left really riled up over a topic. Sure, they’re passionate about gun control and abortion rights. They really hate President Trump and have no problem voicing their vitriol. But if you really want to get them foaming at the mouth, stop them from spreading disinformation about the “settled science” of climate change.
Republicans in the Oregon legislature took it a step further by not just stopping the disinformation but stopping the passage of an obtuse climate change fighting bill. Instead of allowing the necessary 20 members to be present for the vote to proceed, they left.
The bill is mirrored after a similar California bill. It would impose a cap-and-trade program on Oregon businesses, slowing growth and hitting Oregon residents in their pocketbooks.
But it’ll save the environment for the whole world, or something like that, according to radical progressive governor Kate Brown.
“It would have been historic for Oregon, historic for the country, and frankly historic for the world,” Brown said at a press conference on Thursday. “Unfortunately Senate Republicans failed to show up and failed to do their jobs.”
In response to the twelve Republicans leaving the capital, the governor has called on Oregon State Police to track them down and bring them back for the vote.
Opinion
What the Democratic governor of Oregon gets very wrong is believing the only way to represent constituents is to do so from the capital. That isn’t the case, has never been the case, and never should be the case. Sometimes, leaving the capital in order for actions to be stopped is exactly the best way to do one’s job.
This abomination of a bill will harm Oregon businesses and citizens just as it has harmed California’s businesses and citizens. As cities like Portland and San Francisco continue to fall apart under the inept leadership of Democrats, the governors of both states are focused on carbon emissions.
Who is really doing a good job, the governor who’s going to harm her constituents for the sake of putting a radical climate change bill on her resume or the lawmakers who are fighting for the people they represent, getting chased down by law enforcement in the process?
Quote
“Protesting cap-and-trade by walking out today represents our constituency and exactly how we should be doing our job.” – Senate Republican Leader Herman Baertschiger Jr
Final Thoughts
Sometimes, action is required by politicians in order to properly represent their constituents. Other times, stopping action is the best they can do. The Oregon GOP is doing what’s best for the people who voted for them. They should be commended.
